Last night, writer Nora Ephron passed away at the age of 71 after a long and secretive battle with myeloid leukemia. Though most will remember her for her sharp wit and prolific body of work, including the classic romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, the food world remembers her as a great epicure, a gourmand who would rather have four types of dessert at dinner, the writer of the Julia Child biopic Julie and Julia, and a casual foe of ascetic eaters: “I respect vegetarians, but I could never fall in love with one.”
When news of her death trickled through the web, dozens of food personalities offered up their tributes and memories of a woman whose capacity for withering remarks never eclipsed her generous spirit.
