Remember when Michelle Obama tried restricting cafeteria lunch servings to a maximum of 850 calories for high schoolers as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which is, y’know, plenty of calories for one meal to sustain life? And those high schoolers promptly began dropping like flies claiming that the new meal plan was starving them to death? And making whiny viral music videos to the tune of Fun.’s “We Are Young” entitled “We Are Hungry”?
Well, PS 244 in Queens recently overhauled their cafeteria to an all-vegetarian menu, and guess what? No Pre-K-through-3rd-graders are crying about it. According to the Huffington Post, in fact, “Principal Robert Groff said Tuesday the kids gravitated toward veggie offerings, including black beans and cheddar quesadillas served with salsa and roasted potatoes.”
And guess what’s probably cheaper for cash-strapped public schools? All-veg menus. And guess how you can probably fit more/filling foods into a meal that still complies with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act’s calorie maximums? All-veg menus. And guess who isn’t dying of iron deficiency? Any of these kids in Queens.
Suck it up, teens.
