There’s a part of us that sort of feels sorry for Paula Deen in the midst of her empire-ending racism scandal, in that all of her former friends are turning on her. Well, “friend” is a relative term for “an employee of 20-plus years who has just revealed the awkward racism she had to deal with.” Being asked to dress up like Aunt Jemima, et al.
And now Paula Deen denies this story, as she (or maybe a rep, we can’t tell with all the tense shifts) tells ETOnline:
“Ms. Charles’ ‘issue’ is about money, not race. She receives a salary of more than $70,000 per year, plus profit sharing and benefits. For 20 years she has been paid a fair wage for her work, but she feels she deserves even more money. She claimed to be a friend of Paula Deen’s but is now trying to cash in on the current situation.”
For some reason, we’ve got this song stuck in our heads while trying to empathize with Deen:
