After Danny Bowien and the OK Chefs’ successful, $80,000+ fundraiser last week to help victims of the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma City, another hometown hero is coming back to raise money. Rick Bayless and the OK Chefs Relief Fund will stage a charity pop-up on June 24th.
In an interview with the master of Mexican cuisine, The Oklahoman unearthed a few details about the event, specifically that it will be a pop-up version of one of his restaurants. So either the fine-dining Topolobampo, the casual Frontera Grill, or the street-inspired Xoco will appear at the Will Rogers Theater that night — or, they speculate, a mix of all three. Presumably, the payment structure will be similar to the last OK Chefs relief event (pay what you want, all proceeds go to charity).
We’ll update here with more details as they emerge — and until that happens, here’s Rick Bayless talking with The Oklahoman about his childhood in the Big Friendly, and how he always, always gets a burger from Johnnie’s the moment his plane lands in Oklahoma City.
