Today in strange addictions, we present a man from northern India who can’t stop eating knives. You read that correctly. Over the course of two months the man, whose name has not been released developed an urge to consume knives, and he ingested 40 of them. On Friday, he had surgery to have them removed.
He told CNN, “I just enjoyed its taste and I was addicted…how people get addicted to alcohol and other things, my situation was similar.” To that I say, no it’s not, and I don’t need to explain why.
During the five hour surgery, doctors removed knives, both folded and unfolded, including some that were rusting. When they were extended, some of the knives were seven inches long. Doctors still don’t know what it is that caused him to eat them, but the man will remain in the hospital until a psychiatric evaluation is completed.
Dr. Jatinder Malhotra, who did the surgery believes it’s possible that the man’s desire to consume metal came from an iron craving or deficiency. If that’s the case, might we suggest a steak or some spinach?
