The cutest/most controversial interracial family in America is back, and this time, they’ll be beamed into every house in America: Cheerios is bringing back the family from the ad that spawned a million op-eds about race, and eighty million nuclear racist YouTube comments, to the Big Game.
And if people got mad about an interracial family last time, this one should really explode their minds: in the commercial, which will air during the Super Bowl, a black father uses Cheerios to explain to his multiracial daughter that her white mother is expecting another multiracial daughter. Cue the trolls.
We, personally, agree with the sentiment General Mills gave to the New York Times:
General Mills did not intend to be provocative when it introduced the first commercial, Ms. Gibson said, nor does the company intend that now. Rather, the spots reflect that “there are many kinds of families,” she said, “and we celebrate them all.”
