“Nathan didn’t invent the hot dog. He just made it perfect.” If you live in or have visited New York, Coney Island is either a place you go with your family every year, or a place you avoid like the plague. But even if you haven’t been, you know Nathan’s famous hot dogs. They’re everywhere. Plus, they have an annual hot dog eating contest every Fourth of July where grown adults shove as many of the things into their faces as they can as quickly as possible.
What you might not know is that the institution has survived depressions and hurricanes. It’s a classic. The Wall Street Journal put together a video on the history of Nathan’s, just in time for the holiday.
