Sturgeon Queens: Come for the lox porn, stay for the enduring tale of the Lower East Side appetizing company that’s been around for nearly 100 years (in fact, it’s turning 100 this year). Filmmaker Julie Cohen’s documentary about the legendary Russ and Daughters involves four generations, a lengthy discussion on feminism (back in the day, no one ever involved their daughters in the family business), and approximately 1,800,000 pounds of pickled herring.
Sturgeon Queens will premiere in the fall on PBS, but will hit up a few festival screenings, including at the JCC CineMatters festival on New York’s Upper West Side on May 20th.
