Dem Rep Rips Trump at Nielsen Hearing: ‘White Babies Would Not Be Treated the Way These Babies of Color Are Being Treated’
Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green delivered an impassioned rebuke of Donald Trump and his administration over its treatment of migrant children, telling Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen that “White babies would not be treated the way these babies of color are being treated.”
At a House Homeland Security Committee hearing Wednesday, Nielsen faced tough questioning over her department’s detention of children and separation of families. Toward the end of the hearing, Green spoke up to accuse the administration of discriminating based on skin color, and singled out Trump as well.
“There are those who believe that we already have too many people of color in this country, and these, one of them happens to be the president of the United States of America,” Green said, adding that these people “would institute policies that will prevent people of color from coming to this country.”
“White babies would not be treated the way these babies of color are being treated, Madam Secretary!” Green continued. “This is about color! We’ve opened our doors, oh, your tired, your poor huddled masses yearning to breathe free, except we now have our quota of people of color.”
Nielsen asked for the chance to respond, but Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) ruled that since Green had not asked a question, she would not be permitted a response.
Democrats on the committee lambasted Nielsen and the Trump administration, including Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), who asked Nielsen to describe the difference between the facilities for detained children and a dog cage.
Nielsen explained that the “detention space,” as she called it, is “larger, it has facilities, it provides room to sit, to stand, to lay down.”
“So did my dog’s cage,” Rep. Coleman replied.
Immediately following the hearing, Nielsen approached Green and spoke with him for a few seconds, but their conversation was not audible.
