Late on Thusday, the culinary world suffered a heartbreaking loss. Sam Beall of Blackberry Farm died in a skiing accident in Colorado at the age of 39. Beall was born on the farm, and after honing his skills at places like the French Laundry, he took over his parents’ role as proprietor of the farm. Since he took over, he added two restaurants which earned him three James Beard Awards. He is survived by his wife and five children. Beall was a beloved person, and people in the industry are grieving. Many celebrity chefs have expressed their condolences and paid tribute via social media:

Sam Beall died tragically in a ski accident and my heart goes out to Mary Celeste and their five kids and the the entire extended family at @blackberryfarm. Sam taught me so much about hospitality and gastronomy. He was always a big supporter of my career. I will miss him so much. He let Meehan and me finish the first cookbook at the farm…The man could eat a mountain of black walnuts, taught me to be generous with caviar and to always appreciate a great bottle of wine. I’m so saddened by his departure. I feel so badly for his families loss
