Josh Hammer, the conservative commentator and friend of the late Charlie Kirk, says he is mulling a defamation lawsuit against Candace Owens, who suggested he might have had foreknowledge of Kirk’s assassination.

In an interview with Erin Molan published on Monday, Hammer talked about Owens’s propagation of the conspiracy theory that a September 9 tweet from Hammer endorsing the idea of publicly executing criminals in the wake of  Iryna Zarutska’s murder had actually been about Kirk, who was killed one day later.

“I knew nothing about Josh Hammer’s random tweet about public executions the night before Charlie was publicly executed. In what context does that tweet make sense? Literally WTF,” wrote Owens on X. She went on to cover Hammer’s tweet on her show.

Owens said that she “tried in earnest to at first rationalize” Hammer’s tweet, and then went on to ominously point out that it had followed a call with Kirk. Hammer has since provided evidence that the call was a friendly one by furnishing messages exchanged between the two afterwards.

On Molan’s show, Hammer discussed how he found out about Owens’s commentary and revealed that he may pursue legal action against her:

Now, someone did tell me at synagogue while I was offline, you know, “Just a heads up, Candace is really going after you.” And that kind of steeled me a little bit, but there&

#8217;s really no preparation for like actually turning the phone on and truly seeing all the notifications. I’ll put it to you this way, I was up till 3 a.m. local time that night, just dealing with all the messages, and emails and, and whatnot there. It’s not fun. Now to an extent it’s-, you know, it’s part of just the nature of our business.I mean, when you put yourselves out there, you’re going to get pushback. But this is not pushback, right? I mean, this is not someone responding to a legal theory of mine or making an intelligent point about the two-state solution or not two-state solution. No, I mean this is literally just picking a Jewish person and calling him sub-human filth, and sickening your band of millions and millions of neo-Nazi zealots on a Jewish person who happens to be a, yeah, like Charlie, happens to be a husband and a father to a young child. So I mean it’s just awful, awful stuff. And I guess I will say, Erin, I’m pretty sure I’ve said this publicly already, you know, I’m talking to lawyers. I think-, I’m a lawyer with my background. I clerked for a federal appeals judge. I know a thing or two about United States constitutional law. I think that we have a potentially serious
case here for defamation, and I’m very much speaking with lawyers and we’ll see what happens.
