Fox News host Neil Cavuto pressed anti-Trump Republican Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) about polls showing many Republicans who support Nikki Haley will vote for President Joe Biden if former President Donald Trump wins the GOP nomination.
Monday marks the first nominating contest in the Republican presidential primary, the influential (if not representative) Iowa caucuses. One subplot of the early coverage has been polling that shows large numbers of Haley supporters — by 2 to 1 — saying they’ll vote for Biden over Trump.
On Monday’s edition of Fox News Channel’s Your World with Neil Cavuto, Cavuto asked Sununu about that uncomfortable stat — and cut in to get him back on track when he tried to talk his way around answering:
SUNUNU: If you’re sitting on the couch watching this, if you’re a Republican that’s frustrated with Donald Trump, go out and caucus for Nikki Haley. If you’re one of these people that say that Trump is the end of democracy, well, then participate in the democratic process and go — go caucus for Nikki Haley. Make it something that you can — that you can effect the change on.And, in Iowa, almost anybody can do it. In New Hampshire, it’s Republicans and undeclareds. So I think you’re going to see a very high turnout both in Iowa and New Hampshire for both the caucus and the primary.CAVUTO: Does it disturb you, as
a Republican, though, Governor, Nikki Haley supporters — and I got evidence of that today in a diner talking to many of them — are more inclined to support a Democrat than they would Donald Trump if it came down to a general election and he were the nominee? What do you think of that?SUNUNU: Yes, look, Joe Biden has just crushed the country, because he’s not even managing anything. It’s not even — it’s — I mean, you could kind of blame him, but it’s these unnamed staffers, it’s the bureaucrats that are crushing the country with inflation, regulations, lack of management, all this wokism. It’s awful. It’s absolutely awful. So, again, the best way to hedge against that is to kind of move us forward with that new generation of leadership, getting behind Nikki Haley, driving forward on a win. But, yes, look…CAVUTO: No, but — I’m sorry, Governor. I wasn’t clear. What they’re saying — but, Governor, Governor, what they’re saying is, they would support that Democrat, they would support Joe Biden if push came to shove and it was a choice between the president and the last president.SUNUNU: Yes, that’s troubling.(LAUGHTER)SUNUNU: Yes, there’s no doubt that that is troubling, because what vine has done to this country is so bad. There will be timeto, again, galvanize the Republican Party together after the primary. That always happens, regardless of who the candidate is.CAVUTO: Yes.SUNUNU: I think it’s going to be Nikki. I think she’s got a shot. But, no, this country needs a major turn away from Joe Biden, for sure.
