President Donald Trump’s claims that there are “methods” by which he could run for a third term are not being taken lightly by the electorate.

A majority of Americans believe the president will ultimately try for a third term in office, according to a new poll by YouGov. In all, 56 percent of respondents think Trump will either “definitely” or “probably” attempt to serve a third term as president. That number doubles the 28 percent who believe the president definitely or probably won’t launch a 2028 bid. Another 15 percent say they aren’t sure.

Talk of a third Trump term — pushed by allies like Steve Bannon for weeks — has ratcheted up this week after Trump himself told NBC’s Kristen Welker he believes there are ways he could make it happen.

“There are methods which you could do it, as you know,” Trump told Welker.

The 22nd Amendment states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Welker, in her interview with Trump, asked

him about a scenario in which Vice President JD Vance would run at the top of the ticket in 2028, and then resign and hand the job to Trump — if victorious.

“That’s one [scenario],” Trump told Welker. “But there are others too.”

Just before the 2024 election, Trump seemed to slam the door on a 2028 run — telling syndicated journalist Sharyl Attkisson, “I don’t see that at all.

But the president, in his interview with Welker, clearly entertained the prospect.

“You know, a lot of people would like me to do that,” Trump told Welker. “But, I mean, I basically tell them, we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
