President Donald Trump had critics’ heads spinning following a campaign speech where he did everything from roast “pain in the a*s” Republican candidate Ken Paxton to dumping water on stage to dismissing affordability concerns as phony.
Trump spoke at the Choctaw Event Center in Durant, Oklahoma, and the Peterbilt Motors Company factory in Denton, Texas, on Thursday as part of his midterm push for Republicans.
His rollercoaster interview with TIME already had his critics talking, but Trump’s latest speeches had critics questioning his mental state and scratching their heads at his overall strategy for the midterms.
“No one insults the intelligence of Trump voters more than Donald Trump,” MS NOW’s Lawrence O’Donnell wrote on X in response to Trump speaking about his nickname “Dumocrats” for Democrats and how “nobody knows” that the word “dumb” has a b on the end of it.
It was one of several moments critics honed in on to accuse Trump of directly insulting his MAGA fans.
Trump also surprised by ramping up his criticism of Paxton, the controversial Republican candidate running against Democrat James Talarico in Texas. Trump has lightly mocked Paxton in the past, but he labeled him a “pain in the a**” while speaking in Texas.
“Ken Paxton was at my side, more than anybody, and I have to always remember that because he can be a pain in the a** sometimes — I’ll be honest,” the president said. “Is he here, by the way? Oh, there he is. Good. I didn’t even know if he was here! I don’t care.”
Trump praised Paxton’s work as attorney general in Texas, but the roasting only inspired more mockery from critics.
“The GOP has a crazy humiliation kink to deal with this,” Fox News’ Jessica Tarlov wrote.
“He’s old, he’s humanly incapable of caring about anyone or anything but himself, and he’s rapidly losing his mind,” former congressman Joe Walsh wrote.
Trump also threw critics for a loop with a moment where he dumped a glass of water on the floor while speaking about fuel prices, as well as joking about giving a “full pardon” for NBA players Dennis Rodman and Enes Kanter Freedom to play in the WNBA.
