Trump Pledges ‘Full Pardon’ for Dennis Rodman and Enes Kanter Freedom to Pursue WNBA Careers ‘Anytime They Want’
President Donald Trump bizarrely vowed to give former NBA stars Dennis Rodman and Enes Kanter Freedom a “full pardon” to pursue careers in the WNBA, saying they will break “every record in the history of women’s sports.”
Trump made the strange pledge as he addressed supporters in a Durant, Oklahoma, rally on Thursday night, with both hoops players in attendance.
Touting Rodman’s storied career and time as a star forward at Oklahoma State University (Fact check: Rodman did not attend Oklahoma State University; he played at Southeastern Oklahoma State University), Trump said, “You’re a five-time NBA champion, Dennis. Man oh man, that’s good.”
Trump added: “So [Rodman and Kanter Freedom], they are good and they have an exemption. I’m giving them a full pardon that they can go into women’s sports anytime they want. And I guarantee — he’s giving me a Thunder jacket — and I guarantee you when they do, they will break, even though they’re slightly older — although Freedom looks like he’s pretty young — they will break every record in the history of women’s sports.”
Rodman, a friend of Trump who retired from the NBA in 2000, once credited himself for helping to set up a historic meeting between Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un in 2018.
Despite online rumors to the contrary, Rodman has never expressed interest in playing in the WNBA.
Kanter Freedom, on the other hand, declared for the league’s draft in August as part of his campaign against the WNBA over how it approaches transgender issues.
