Trump Rips ‘Sleazebag Journalists’ Over ‘Crazy’ Reaction to Justice John Roberts Hot Mic Greeting — and Reveals Why He Was Thanking Him
President Donald Trump railed against the “sleazebag journalists” at CNN and MSNBC speculating over his brief exchange with Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts during his Tuesday address to Congress.
Following his speech, Trump shook Roberts’ hand and could be heard on a hot mic telling the justice, “Thank you again, I won’t forget it,” before giving him a pat on the back.
The moment quickly ignited speculation over what the two were talking about.
MSNBC, for one, proposed that Trump could have been referencing the Supreme Court’s July 2024 ruling that granted presidents broad immunity from prosecution for official acts. That decision effectively derailed Trump’s criminal cases related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, allowing him to continue his campaign and ultimately reclaim the presidency.
The network also suggested Trump could also have been thanking him for Fischer v. United States, which he authored, significantly narrowing the scope of obstruction charges against Jan. 6 defendants — a decision that also had the potential to bolster Trump’s legal defense in his federal election interference case.
But Trump, in a late-night Truth Social rant on Wednesday, accused the press of trying to “create a divide” between him and the nation’s highest court, dismissing concerns as “Fake ‘Play the Ref’ News.”
The Fake “Play the Ref” News, in order to create a divide between me and our great U.S. Supreme Court, heard me say last night, loudly and openly as I was walking past the Justices on the way to the podium, “thank you,” to Chief Justice John Roberts. Like most people, I don’t watch Fake News CNN or MSDNC, but I understand they are going “crazy” asking what is it that I was thanking Justice Roberts for? They never called my office to ask, of course, but if they had I would have told these sleazebag “journalists” that I thanked him for SWEARING ME IN ON INAUGURATION DAY, AND DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB IN SO DOING!
