James Carville Tells Democrats to ‘Save Democracy’ From Trump by Adding New Blue States, Packing Supreme Court

James Carville believes the way Democrats can “save democracy” is by adding new states and expanding the Supreme Court.

The longtime Democratic strategist recommended radical reforms from Democrats in order to “save democracy” from President Donald Trump. On his Politics War Room podcast for Politicon, co-hosted by Al Hunt, Carville declared, “the truth of the matter is, people are right when they say this democracy is really imperfect.”

Carville took issue with a number of things happening under Trump, including the redrawing of congressional district maps in Texas, and imagined a world where Democrats managed to get the presidency, as well as control of the Senate and House. The once key advisor to former President Bill Clinton said with that power Democrats should put time restrictions on redrawing congressional maps, expand the Supreme Court to 13 members, and recognize Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia as new states.

“They are just going to have to unilaterally add Puerto Rico and District of Columbia states… They’re just going to have to do it. And they may have to expand the [Supreme Court] to 13 members,” Carville said.

He further argued that these reforms on their own could be concerning, but the sweeping changes are needed together to course correct Trump’s years in office. He called the current president a threat and argued the country is “moving further away from being anything close to a democracy.”

“Any of those things in isolation I would be skeptical about. I would be cautious about,” Carville said. “I would say, ‘Well, I don’t know if that’s the greatest idea in the world, you’re opening Pandora’s Box.’ If you want to save democracy, I think you got to do all of those things because we just are moving further and further away from being anything close to democracy.”
