CBS Sports analyst Wally Szczerbiak took aim at college basketball’s selection committee after Virginia’s abysmal performance against Colorado State in the men’s tournament.
Playing in the First Four, the Rams took down the Cavaliers 67-42 to earn the 10th seed in the Midwest bracket. Early on, it was apparent that the people in the crowd — as well as the ones at home — were in for a rough viewing experience. Colorado State led 27-14 at halftime, with Virginia not scoring at all in the final nine minutes of the first half.
After the game, Szczerbiak slammed the committee for Virginia’s inclusion in the tournament.
“This performance matters by Virginia,” the former NBA player said. “I mean, Mountain West completely blew them off the floor. Mountain West, we’ve been saying, has been completely under-seeded; and the way you perform in this tournament, it puts the committee on notice. They made a mistake putting Virginia into the NCAA Tournament. Every ‘bracketologist’ was saying it. They go out and play like this. It’s unwatchable basketball the way they played today on national TV.
“St. John’s is sitting there like, ‘We’ve won six out of seven. We’re scoring 90 points a game, playing great basketball down the stretch in the Big East.’ Seton Hall beat Marquette and UConn. They’re sitting at home
