In response to Mike Pence walking out of an NFL game over national anthem protests, San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid is claiming the vice president just showed up to pull off a “PR stunt.”

The game, which was between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts, was the first appearance Pence has made at Lucas Oil Stadium since 2014. Given this fact, Reid believes the former governor of Indiana chose now to come back to a Colts game solely to make a statement against the NFL protests that have recently ramped up.

Reid’s comments to reporters on the subject took place after the game:

“So this looks like a PR stunt to me. He knew our team has had the most players protest. He knew that we were probably going to do it again… This is what systemic oppression looks like. A man with power comes to the game, tweets a couple of things out and leaves the game with an attempt to thwart our efforts. Based on the information I have, that’s the assumption I’ve made.”

Reportedly, the vice president walked out right after the playing of the national anthem — he then released a statement on the issue saying, “I left today’s Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”
