New York Mets announcer Gary Cohen took issue with Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw missing a game to attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial service.

The service for Kirk — who was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 — was held this past Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. That day, Shaw was notably absent as the Cubs took on the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs lost 1-0.

It wasn’t until after the game that it was revealed Shaw did not play because he was in Arizona for the service. He had been given permission by the team.

During Tuesday night’s game between the Cubs and the Mets, Cohen explained why he had a problem with Shaw missing a game that could determine playoff seeding.

“Shaw had Cubs world in a tizzy this weekend when he was not here for the Cubs game with the Reds,” Cohen said, “a game they lost one-nothing, and in which his lack of presence was felt. It was later revealed that he had been given permission to attend Charlie Kirk’s funeral. And I don’t want to talk about any of the politics of it, but the thought of leaving your team in the middle of a race for any reason other than a family emergency really strikes me as weird.”

Before Tuesday’s game, Shaw spoke to the media about his

decision. He said the two met in Arizona, describing Kirk as “one of the biggest Cubs fans” he’s ever met. He went on to add that he talked to Kirk regularly.
