A blowout in Monday’s Philadelphia Phillies game meant that announcer John Kruk could offer viewers his peculiar thoughts about the invention of the clock.
The Phillies got off to a quick start in Monday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, leading 6-0 by the fourth inning. Although the Mariners eventually put up some runs of their own, they were unable to close the gap and lost 12-7.
When it appeared things were already wrapped up by the fourth inning, Kruk told play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy about something that had been on his mind:
KRUK: So you know how I think of things when I have free time and I shouldn’t?MCCARTHY: Yep.KRUK: So I was wondering, the person who invented the clock–MCCARTHY: Yeah. Which one, the digital or the analog?KRUK: The first clock ever. How did that person know what time it was?MCCARTHY: That’s a really good question. Bouncer back toward the middle gobbled up by Young. One-hopper and Bohm is safe. You know, there is that sundial they might have used.KRUK: Is that accurate, though?MCCARTHY: Well, I guess it’s as accurate as it can be.
After briefly breaking the play at first base, they got back to the clock discussion:
MCCARTHY: So when you were contemplating the clock thing, did you come up with any answers yourself?KRUK: No, no. I thought I’d ask you!MCCARTHY:
I would think sundial.KRUK: OK.
