Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) claimed on Monday that drug cartels “have had operational control” of both the southern and northern U.S. borders.

On President Donald Trump’s recent agreements with Canada and Mexico to prevent the trafficking of fentanyl across the border – which came about as a result of tariff threats towards the two countries – Donalds told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow:

Promises made, promises kept. Donald Trump told you he was gonna do everything to secure this nation and that’s what he’s done. No talking points, no silly blue-ribbon panels that go nowhere, no meetings that do absolutely nothing. Decisive action with results, that’s what Donald Trump has brought here. Listen, nobody wants to be in an out-and-out trade war, there’s other things that need to occur, but Canada and Mexico, both of them had to know how serious we are. They are gonna commit the resources. The president, in my view, this is a win for him, but more importantly, this is a win for the American people. Fentanyl has been killing more Americans than anything else in our country. The number one cause of death between the ages of 18 and 45. The drug cartels have had operational control of both of our borders, Larry. This has got to change. Donald Trump promised it and he has delivered.

After Kudlow asked whether Trump was actually prepared to follow through with his

tariff threats should Canada and Mexico refuse to cooperate, Donalds said, “He was going to follow through, and I believe that Trudeau and the Mexican president, they realized that very quickly.”

The congressman concluded, “The rest of the world understands this ain’t Joe Biden. When Donald Trump says something, he’s going to do it. There’s not gonna be this soft diplomacy of Tony Blinken. When Marco Rubio shows up, you know we mean business.”
