‘Seriously?’ Michael Steele Mocks Fox News Pundit Hailing Trump’s ‘Ugly’ Gold Sneakers as Outreach to ‘Black America’

Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo raised eyebrows this weekend when he praised Donald Trump’s limited edition gold sneakers because they will connect with “Black America.”

That assessment was not shared by MNSBC host and former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele, who is Black.

Last week, Trump unveiled $400 gold sneakers one day after he was ordered to pay $354 million after being found liable for fraud in Manhattan. Arroyo spun the product as a way to appeal to Black voters.

“This is connecting with Black America because they love sneakers!” Arroyo said. “They’re into sneakers! They love the– you know, this is a big deal, certainly in the inner city. So when you have Trump roll out his sneaker line, they’re like, ‘Wait a minute, this is cool.’ He’s reaching them on a level that defies and is above politics. The culture always trumps politics, and Trump understands culture like no politician I’ve ever seen.”

Steele, who called the footwear “gaudy,” aired Arroyo’s remarks and offered his reaction after a noticeable, perhaps incredulous pause.

“Seriously?” he said while guest-hosting Thursday’s All In on MSNBC. “Why didn’t I think of this when I ran the RNC? Let’s see. Black folks love sneakers and we can paint them gold. This can’t miss. Trust me, it’s a big miss. And they ugly as hell.”

Trump is the runaway frontrunner in the Republican primary and it is expected he will face President Joe Biden in a rematch of the 2020 election.
