Todd Blanche Says Trump Shouldn’t Be Sent to Jail Because He’s Old: ‘Other 77-Year-Old First-Time Offenders Would Never Be Sent to Prison’
Former President Donald Trump’s defense attorney Todd Blanche argued on Thursday that his client should not be sent to prison because he’s 77 years old.
During an interview with Blanche following the jury’s unanimous guilty verdict in Trump’s New York hush money trial, CNN host Kaitlan Collins asked, “District Attorney Bragg tonight did not directly say whether or not they are going to seek jail time for Donald Trump. Do you expect that he will?”
Blanche replied, “I have no idea. Look, there’s a system in place where you rely on precedent, and somebody like President Trump should never, never face a jail sentence based on this conduct.”
He told Collins, “It would just kind of confirm what we’ve been saying all along,” before arguing, “Other 77-year-old first-time offenders would never be sent to prison for this conduct.”
“Judge Merchan will make that decision,” noted Collins, to which Blanche acknowledged, “Correct. That’s right.”
After Collins asked Blanche whether he believed Judge Merchan “was fair throughout this case,” Blanche said, “I think that there were times when we very much disagreed with the decisions Judge Merchan made. I think there were times when we certainly appreciated that he was making decisions, you know, weighing both sides and making decisions based upon that.”
He concluded, “But at the end of the day, there were key decisions made before the trial started and during the trial that– I don’t wanna use ‘fair’ or ‘unfair,’ but that we think were not consistent with the law.”
After Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg was asked on Thursday whether he will seek prison time for former President Trump, Bragg replied, “The judge has scheduled a sentencing for July 11th. We will speak in court in that time. He also set a motion schedule. We will speak in our court filings as we’ve done throughout this proceeding.”
