Beto Cops to White Privilege, But Adds He’s ‘The Only Candidate From the US/Mexico Border’

Former Texas Congressman and newly-announced Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke admitted he benefits from white privilege, but also claimed that among the diverse field of Democrats, he’s the “only candidate from the United States/Mexico border.”

On Sunday morning’s edition of NBC’s Meet the Press, host Chuck Todd told the towering O’Rourke “You have admitted that, hey, you’re in a party right now that isn’t necessarily interested in a white male candidate, and that you’re sort of at a disadvantage in that. And yet the coverage of your campaign some people have criticized going, ‘Oh, it’s not fair. He’s getting coverage that some of the other candidates didn’t get.’ You’ve actually tried to answer some of that criticism. What do you say to that?”

O’Rourke began by telling Todd “I would never begin by saying I’m at any disadvantage at all. As a white man who has had privileges that others could not depend on or take for granted, I’ve clearly had advantages over the course of my life.”

He also praised the Democratic field of candidates, saying that “the diversity of background, and experience, expertise that is going to be brought to bear on these problems is exceptional.”

“But I’ll tell you I also happen to be the only candidate from the United States/Mexico border at a time that that dominates so much of our national conversation and legislative efforts and the things that the president talks about,” O’Rourke continued, adding that “There’s one candidate who’s there who can talk about the profoundly positive impact that immigrants have had on our safety and our security, as well as our success and our strength.”

Texas Democrat Julian Castro might have something to say about the former claim, and many other Democrats with large immigrant constituencies and/or personal immigrant roots might dispute the latter assertion.
