A witness in the trial of Derek Chauvin testified Tuesday that she has stayed up nights apologizing for not doing more to save George Floyd’s life – but that Chauvin is ultimately to blame.

The witness, identified in court only as D.F. but known to be Darnella Frazier, recorded and shared video of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck to pin him face-down, as Floyd lost consciousness. Pursuant to a ruling from judge Peter Cahill, Frazier is not being shown on camera during the trial because she was 17 at the time of the incident.

Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell asked Frazier how witnessing what happened to George Floyd has affected her life.

“When I look at George Floyd, I look at my dad,” Frazier said. “I look at my brothers. I look at my cousins, my uncles. Because they are all Black. I have a Black father. I have a Black brother. I have Black friends. And I look at that and I look at how that could have been one of them.”

“It’s been nights I’ve stayed up apologizing and apologizing to George Floyd for not doing more and not physically interacting and not saving his life,” Frazier continued, sounding close to tears. “But it’s like, it’s not what I should have done. It’s what he should have done,” Frazier added, referring to Chauvin.

In May 2020, the death of George Floyd while in police custody set off marches, demonstrations, and protests

worldwide. Chauvin is now facing murder and manslaughter charges.
