Sen. Mark Warner Visits MSNBC to Awkwardly Walk Back His Praise of Trump On Fox: ‘My Words Yesterday… Were Not Great’

Two Warners don’t make a right.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) has taken to MSNBC to walk back praise of President Donald Trump he made on the Fox Business Network just a day earlier.

It all started on Tuesday, when Warner lauded Trump for his border policies as he spoke with Liz Claman on Fox Business’ The Claman Countdown ahead of the president’s speech to Congress Tuesday night.

Listen, I, you know, some people would call me boring that way, but I think I may disagree with the president, but I respect the office of the president. And, you know, I’m probably not going to be jumping up applauding a lot are. But I owe him his due as president to lay out — and if he’d come in and done thing, the president’s made great, great progress on border crossings. That’s something we ought to celebrate. But basically declaring economic war on Canada and Mexico and to see the price effects at the same time that we’re walking away from the traditional support for democracies around the world, that’s not about a lowering grocery prices. I believe president trump got elected because of the border and if trying to lower prices. On border, I give him good marks. On lowering prices, I think you’re going to see the exact opposite.

Appearing on MSNBC Reports with Katy Tur on Wednesday, Warner was asked about the previous day’s remarks, and he stammered through an explanation.

KATY TUR: You were saying on Fox News, I believe it was yesterday that Donald Trump has done a good job at the border. So do you agree with that assessment that Donald Trump is the only thing that’s needed to change the circumstances at the border?
MARK WARNER: I think it is good that we’re at a 25 year low in terms of border crossing. My words yesterday, yeah, they were not great. Let me be the first to acknowledge that. And I think what he’s doing to our. Why aren’t they and why.
TUR: Why weren’t they great?
WARNER: Because the notion that the numbers are down, which I think is good for America, and I think the vast majority of Americans realized you. President Biden didn’t have a secure enough border. Those numbers are down. That’s good news for our country. But the idea that that becomes a an ability to sanction ice, to have, you know, unfettered immigration, unfettered immigration raids doesn’t make sense. So my choice of words yesterday, you know, I’d like to take him back. The data does exist on the numbers being down, what we’ve got to do going forward. And we again heard last night from a president who had a state of the union that I’ll stand by. My words was the least amount of outreach to anybody who didn’t vote for him. That doubled down on all the Maga issues. It’s not wasn’t a good night for America last night.
