ABC News’ Jonathan Karl spoke candidly Monday about his concern for White House press secretary Sean Spicer, saying he believed the job was having an adverse effect on his health.
The chief Washington correspondent told Politico that Spicer was “tough,” but, “I worry a little bit about his health, because he spends so much time angry at the podium and he’s often angry when he’s not at the podium.”
“He’s under enormous pressure; I don’t think anybody has had a harder job to do,” Karl said. “Look at previous White House press secretaries. He’s got such a difficult job.”
Karl suggested that most of the stress came from President Donald Trump‘s hands-on approach to communications strategy and frequent criticism. “It puts an incredible amount of pressure when you’re thinking, ‘The boss, who happens to be the President of the United States of America, is watching everything I’m saying right now and critiquing, and he’s going to call me when I get off,’” he said.
