So what’s the deal, Jason Chaffetz? Is there a scandal coming down the pike that we don’t know about?
“Absolutely, positively not,” Chaffetz told Politico on Thursday. “Not in any way, shape, or form.”
He added, “If they had something really scandalous, it would’ve come out a long, long time ago.”
So why, then, is the Utah Congressman and House Oversight Committee Chairman contemplating an early exit from office? His comments to Politico don’t exactly shed much light on the matter.
“I don’t know exactly where these winds are going to take me,” he said. “I just know that I wanted to explore those. And by making the announcement early, it helps on several fronts. I can pursue those opportunities and see what is out there.”
Politico‘s reporting also expands on comments made earlier Thursday to KSL radio in Salt Lake City. Chaffetz told that outlet, and Politico as well, that he was not ruling out a future run for office. Politico reports that Chaffetz has begun registering URLs relating to a possible 2020 run for governor in Utah. Chaffetz could potentially face stiff competition in that race from, among others, Mitt Romney‘s son, Josh Romney.
