Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) is already under fire for having a sexual harassment claim against him settled with taxpayer money. Now, a new report is detailing claims by former staffers of verbally abusive behavior.
In an interview with CNN, Farenthold’s former communications director Michael Rekola detailed his claims of verbal abuse against the Texas Congressman.
“Every time he didn’t like something, he would call me a f*cktard or idiot. He would slam his fist down in rage and explode in anger,” Rekola said. “He was flying off the handle on every little thing. I couldn’t find a way to control it.”
Rekola recalled an incident several days his wedding, when he claims the Congressman told him, in front of a room full of staffers, “better have your fiancée blow you before she walks down the aisle — it will be the last time.”
Elizabeth Peace, who was also part of Farenthold’s communications team, confirmed Rekola’s account.
“Every staffer in that area heard it,” Peace said. “It was the most shocking thing I’d heard him say at that point.”
Farenthold admitted to frequent use of the term f*cktards, but said it was “in jest, not anger.” He added, “In hindsight, I admit it wasn’t appropriate.”
Wednesday’s CNN report follows the recent revelation that the Congressional Office of Compliance paid $84,000 to settle a sexual harassment claim against Farenthold.
