Dinesh D’Souza‘s controversial anti-Obama documentary 2016: Obama’s America, which saw wide release on August 24th, has now reached number two on the all-time grossing list for political documentaries.
2016 is now only behind the number-one grossing political documentary of all time, Michael Moore‘s Fahrenheit 9/11, which racked up $119 million at the box office during its 2004 theatrical run. 2016‘s distant placement at number-two, with $26.1 million, moves it ahead of other popular liberal documentaries like Moore’s health-care doc Sicko ($24.5M), Al Gore‘s global warming film An Inconvenient Truth ($24.1M), Moore’s post-Columbine gun doc Bowling for Columbine ($21.6M), and Moore’s recent banking crisis movie Capitalism: A Love Story ($14.4M).
Even when adjusted for inflation, 2016‘s box office results will still claim the number-two slot.
2016 alleges that President Obama holds “anti-colonial” and “anti-capitalist” views, inspired by his father Barack Sr., and is attempting to “reshape America.” It has been largely panned by critics, receiving a 30% overall score on review aggregator RottenTomatoes.
