During a Wednesday interview with OutQ on Sirius-XM radio, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) trashed the Log Cabin Republicans, explaining that he believes the gay GOP organization calls themselves that because “their role model is Uncle Tom.”
Earlier this year, openly gay Rep. Frank became the first Congressman to have a same-sex marriage. He told OutQ that he is “appalled” by the Log Cabin Republicans’ insistence on supporting the GOP “in the face of this worse and worse record on public policy” on issues facing homosexuals.
“They’re willing to be accepted with no rights, no right to marry, no right to serve in the military, no right to be protected against hate crimes,” he continued. “I‘ve been hearing why the Log Cabins are gonna make the Republicans better and they’ve been getting worse.”
“I now understand why they call themselves the Log Cabin Republicans,” he explained: “Their role model is Uncle Tom.” Frank was referring to the fictional character from Harriet Beecher Stowe‘s 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin whose name has become an epithet used against black people who are seen as excessively subservient and obedient to white people.
