BBC Report: We Shouldn’t Give ‘Undue Attention’ to Climate Change Deniers
A BBC report issued last week found the network shouldn’t be giving equal time to climate change denialism because “the weight of scientific argument” is sorely lacking on that side of the argument.
The BBC Trust published the report [PDF], which examined issues of impartiality in the BBC’s coverage of issues like climate change. They cite a previous report saying that an issue like climate change is “non-contentious” and they should not give “undue attention to marginal opinion,” and so the BBC has been sending staffers to workshops to understand what it means to be both honest and impartial in their science coverage.
The report does make it clear that they’re not trying to exclude any critical opinions, just that “Audiences should be able to understand from the context and clarity of the BBC’s output what weight to give to critical voices.”
