In an audio recording taped on September 10, 2001, Bill Clinton told audience members at an event in Australia that he once had the chance to kill Osama bin Laden as President, but decided against it to avoid the deaths of 300 innocents.
“I nearly got him once,” he said in a recording of the public event, given to Sky News. “I could have killed him, but I would have had to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan, and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then I would have been no better than him.”
According to former Australian Liberal Party leader Michael Kroger, Clinton consented to being taped.
That Clinton was once in the position to kill bin Laden isn’t news — in fact, the episode itself was well-documented in the 9/11 Commission Report published in 2006. But it’s an eerie coda to a paradigm-shifting historical event.
