Bob Costas Speaks Out on Olympics Absence, Eye Recovery: ‘Hoping That I’m Back by the Weekend’

Bob Costas has been off the air for a few days after dealing with a very noticeable eye infection, and he opened up about it in a new interview with Ryan Seacrest, talking about his recovery while making light of it, saying “both I and the situation have gone viral.”

Matt Lauer has been filling in for the time being, and Costas praised the “wonderful team” at NBC for carrying on through his absence. He’s not really sick, though, because as Costas explained, “If you could remove my eyes from the equation, which I admit is a rather large factor, I feel fine.” The problem is his eyes are so sensitive to light now, he can’t even be in a room with normal light.

Seacrest said he Googled eye infections and it recommended breast milk. Costas joked, “Is there a Lady Madonna standing by?”

More seriously, though, he said he’s “hoping” that he’ll be back by this weekend, and is confident he’ll “be able to do the second half of the games.”
