Bono: We Should Use Comedy to Fight Extremism, Send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock
Bono testified to the Senate Appropriations subcommittee yesterday to talk about combating violent extremism with serious relief efforts and even comedy.
According to Reuters, Bono pushed legislators on a new Marshall Plan to step up humanitarian relief efforts in the Middle East in the name of combating the rise of extremism there and in Europe.
One thing in particular he touched on was the power of comedy to belittle extremists and how dictators like Hitler have tried to silence certain kinds of art they don’t like.
He said that laughing at extremists as they’re “goose-stepping down the street takes away their power,” and so Bono proposed assembling an elite squad of comedians: Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Baron Cohen in particular already has experience lampooning dictators.
