Just last month, Williams checked back into rehab “to fine-tune and focus on his continued commitment, of which he remains extremely proud.” He had struggled with substance abuse and depression for decades, returning to rehab in 2006 for alcohol after reaching 20 years sober.

Williams’ representation issued the following statement:
“This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

Update — Aug. 12, 2:10 p.m. ET: During a press conference Tuesday morning, the Marin County Sheriff confirmed that Robin Williams hanged himself with a belt. Toxicology reports are forthcoming and will likely take 2-6 weeks to be finalized.
