Biden Argues Case Against Assault Weapons, Suggests ‘Buy A Shotgun, Buy A Shotgun’ Instead

Joe Biden has some advice for anyone looking to defend themselves from bad guys: “Buy a shotgun.” One of the most powerful moments during the vice president’s Facebook Town Hall Tuesday came after a question asking if banning semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines could leave law-abiding citizens at higher risk from criminals.

Biden initially laughed off the question asking if it really came from a reader of Parents Magazine, the group that was sponsoring the online question and answer session. Turning more serious, he spoke directly to the woman who asked the question, saying, “If you want to protect yourself, get a double barrel shotgun.” Biden indicated that it’s the same thing he tells his wife. “I said, ‘Jill, if there’s ever a problem, just walk out onto the balcony, put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house. I promise you whoever is coming in…'”

The vice president went on to insist, “You don’t need an AR-15, it’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use and you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself.” His ultimate advice to anyone concerned about their safety was simple: “Buy a shotgun. Buy a shotgun.”
