Cam Newton Apologizes: What I Said Was ‘Degrading and Disrespectful to Women’

Cam Newton has posted an apology video online in response to his comments belittling a female reporter yesterday.

When Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked the Panthers QB a question yesterday, Newton’s first reaction was “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

Newton has gotten a ton of criticism for that remark, and in the video tonight, he directly says, “After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women.”

He said that was not his intention and apologized to anyone who took offense to his comments:

“I’m a man who tries to be a positive role model in my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others. And I own––I take ownership to everything that comes with that, and what I did was extremely unacceptable.”

“To the daughters, the sisters, and the women all around the world,” he concluded, “I sincerely apologize and hope that you can find the kindness in your heart to forgive me. Thank you.”
