Witness the magic of Qiaobi laundry detergent — detergent so effective it can literally wash your black boyfriend until he is Asian!
At least that is apparently the message consumers are meant to draw from this Chinese commercial that is getting all sorts of negative attention beyond its intended market.
The ad features a woman luring her (apparently) black boyfriend into a laundry room, sneakily popping a detergent capsule in his mouth, shoving him head first into the washer, and sitting on the lid until the spin cycle has completed its race-altering alchemy.
The Root‘s Yesha Callahan writes of the commercial:
Just as racism isn’t going anywhere in the U.S., it’s not leaving Asian countries anytime soon. If you take a look at ads featured in those countries, you’ll see everything from products that promise you whiter skin to blatantly racist overtones like the one above, as well as the mocking of black people.
And one can assume that the people at Qiaobi don’t see anything wrong, or why people would have issues with their dirty commercial.
