Cleveland Kidnapping Victims Want Joan Rivers to Apologize for Joke About Them
Joan Rivers cracked a joke about the Cleveland women kidnapped by Ariel Castro this week. On The Today Show, Rivers talked about her living conditions and said, “Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space.” Things got awkward very quickly, Al Roker tried to break the tension and move on, but the kidnapping victims weren’t laughing, and the attorneys for two of them spoke out condemning Rivers’ remarks.
The attorneys for Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry said Rivers’ joke was “beyond shocking and disappointing.” They said, “Our clients are strong, private women who have endured unwanted and often painful media attention for quite some time. They now have to endure this, which is a new low, and we believe a sincere apology is warranted.”
Rivers, however, doesn’t think a small little joke she told in passing warrants such a big apology, and told The Plain Dealer as much.
“I’m a comedienne,” she said. “I know what those girls went through. It was a little, stupid joke. There is nothing to apologize for. I made a joke. That’s what I do. Calm down. Calm f—— down. I’m a comedienne. They’re free, so let’s move on.’’
