On CNN Wednesday morning, Carol Costello asked former Democratic presidential candidate Lincoln Chafee to weigh in on who he thought would be the best VP option for the Democratic ticket: Clinton’s former opponent or… another woman.
Costello offered that Sen. Elizabeth Warren possessed the progressive credentials that might lure Bernie Sanders supporters. Chafee countered that picking Sanders himself would send a strong message of party unification. “That would energize that base, no doubt about it,” he said.
Costello challenged that many were wary of a Warren-Clinton ticket, positing, “Some people say Elizabeth Warren would not be a good choice because it would be two women on the ticket. ‘Perhaps that would be too much.’ Do you agree with that?”
“It’s a factor,” he conceded. But he said that there were other issues in play beyond the senator’s gender, namely that she did not have as much experience in public office as Sanders.
