CNN’s Gloria Borger: Netanyahu Politicized the Holocaust

During post-Benjamin Netanyahu speech analysis, CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger accused the Israeli prime minister of heading into “political territory” when he brought up the Holocaust.

“Those of us who cover politics in this room know that this was a great political speech because he praised Obama before he buried Obama, and that is exactly what he did,” Borger said. “And then at the end of it, when I think he really veered off into political territory — don’t know if it was on a delay at this point — but when he sort of raised the specter of the Holocaust and ‘never again’ and Elie Wiesel, I mean … Ari Fleischer could have done this great political speech.”

Fleischer immediately fired back at Borger, saying it was not political but rather about “survival” and “learning a lesson that created the founding of Israel.” He added: “Talking about the Holocaust is the history of the Jewish people.”

Borger then seemed to walk back her original comments, saying

“you can call it political, you can say it wasn’t political,” but ultimately arguing it was a “powerful moment” for both the American and Israeli audiences.

Netanyahu’s speech was aired on Israeli TV and radio networks with a five-minute delay in order to omit any political statements that could be seen as “election campaigning.”
