CNN’s Jake Tapper Fact-Checks Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez Health Care Claims
— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) August 17, 2018
CNN’s Jake Tapper called out Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday for their claim that a Koch Brothers-funded study found Medicare for all would save the government trillions of dollars.
The claim from two self-proclaimed Democratic socialists stemmed from a report from the Mercatus Center, a non-profit think tank that the Kochs have donated millions to, and reportedly influence the hiring and firing of professors.
According to a Sanders spokesperson, the study concluded that healthcare-for-all would expand the budget by $32 trillion but cause overall health care expenses across the U.S. to drop by $2 trillion.
Tapper cited the author of the report, researcher Charles Blahous, who insisted that the Kochs had no direct influence on his work, and that Sanders is making assumptions about data suggesting a spending increase with Medicare-for-all. Tapper acknowledged that influence from the Kochs is an open question, but concluded Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez seem to be taking the study out of context.
