Comey on Trump’s Threat to Release Tapes: ‘Lordy, I Hope There Are Tapes’

Three days after firing FBI Director James Comey, President Donald Trump issued a warning to Comey via Twitter.

During Thursday’s Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) asked Comey about why he didn’t condemn Trump on-the-spot for his request that Comey back off the investigation into former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn. In his answer, Comey admitted to being “stunned” by the conversation. And then he noted that he’s seen Trump’s Tweet about tapes of their conversation.

His response:

Lordy, I hope there are tapes.

Lordy, we do too.

UPDATE –– 12:06 pm ET: Comey later encouraged the president to “release the tapes.”
