Senator Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, wants the Justice Department to look into evidence that a story about him with underage prostitutes was planted in a number of different news outlets (most infamously in The Daily Caller) by the Cuban government in an effort to discredit him.
Menendez claims he was targeted for his outspokenness against the Castro regime, and one former U.S. official said there’s “credible evidence… linking Cuban agents to the prostitution claims and to efforts to plant the story in U.S. and Latin American media.”
An intelligence report last year reportedly said that Cuban intel created a fake “Pete Williams” tipster that provided false information about Menendez attending parties and engaging with underage Dominican prostitutes. The FBI was looking into this as part of a larger probe about Menendez’ relationship with the wealthy donor whose home he was alleged to have seen the prostitutes at.
When Daily Caller editor-in-chief Tucker Carlson was reached for comment, he said, “I really can’t assess it without more information… It’s bizarre on its face but also fascinating.”
