Hasan Minhaj, The Daily Show‘s senior correspondent, has been chosen as this year’s headlining performer at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“I am thrilled that Hasan will serve as our featured entertainer at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” said Jeff Mason, WHCA president and White House correspondent for Reuters. “Hasan’s smarts, big heart and passion for press freedom make him the perfect fit for our event, which will be focused on the First Amendment and the importance of a robust and independent media.”
The Correspondents’ Dinner will return to Washington on April 29, though it has drawn a lot of intrigue since President Trump and the entire White House staff have said they will not attend the annual event. Minhaj, for his part, has put out a statement which seems to indicate that Trump won’t be getting off the hook that easily when he takes the stage.
“It is a tremendous honor to be a part of such a historic event even though the president has chosen not to attend this year. SAD! Now more than ever, it is vital that we honor the First Amendment and the freedom of the press.”
For the record, Mediaite and the United Talent Agency will hold a celebration during Nerdprom in order to raise money for journalism scholarships.
