Wednesday marked a truly incredible escalation in the rather public battle between President Donald Trump and his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. And to ABC News Chief Legal Analyst and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams, it’s a development worth noting — even amidst all the norm-shattering of the Trump administration.
“This. Is. NOT. NORMAL,” Abrams said Wednesday on GMA. “Let’s be clear. It is not normal to have a public spat with the attorney general over his independence.”
According to Abrams, Wednesday morning’s Trump tweets blasting Sessions, followed by reports he’s been derisively referring to Sessions as Mr. Magoo, represent a truly stunning public spat.
“Some people are saying, ‘people fight.’ And yes, they do,” Abrams said. “But, A) they don’t fight in public like this very often and, B) they don’t fight about the integrity and independence of the Department of Justice.”
And Abrams believes the feud could carry greater implications for Trump, as it pertains to the probe of special counsel Robert Mueller — who, according to a Washington Post report, has been looking into Trump’s efforts to oust Sessions in July.
“This discussion, this fight between Sessions and Trump, now becomes another possible question for Mueller to investigate,” Abrams said.
