Comedian Dave Chappelle revealed at a show this week that when he was dressed up like a mugger for a movie, a police officer confronted him and choked him on-set. Chappelle brought it up as he talked on-stage about the case of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who was grabbed by multiple police officers and died after repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe.”
Chappelle explained, according to a Times-Picayune report on his set, that the second he ducked under police tape on the set, dressed up as a criminal, a real police officer came up to him and started choking him.
Someone working on set yelled at the officer and he stopped. When she explained Chappelle was just an actor, the officer said something to the effect of, “Well, why didn’t he say something?”
And the sad part is that Chappelle wasn’t even that shocked; he said he just resigned himself to the situation of being a black man targeted by a white cop.
