Dem Senator Brutally Mocks Embattled EPA Chief Pruitt For Flying First Class: ‘Nobody Even Knows Who You Are’
EPA chief Scott Pruitt received a grilling on Capitol Hill Wednesday over the multiple areas in which he has allegedly spent hundreds of thousands — perhaps even millions — of taxpayer dollars for arguably unnecessary purchases.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was among the lawmakers on the committee that took Pruitt to task.
“The EPA is simple. It’s to protect human health and the environment, not to protect industry friends or give friends from Oklahoma tens of thousands of dollars in pay raises in defiance of the White House to put polluters first or to travel first class around the world,” Leahy said.
The Vermont senator added that one of his constituents said specifically of Pruitt’s preferenced to fly first class because of security concerns, “What a silly reason you had to fly first class.”
“He said ‘nobody even knows who you are,'” Leahy recalled the constituent as saying.
The New York Times reported last month that Pruitt’s security staff consists of at least 20 people — “three times as large as ones for previous EPA administrators.” The Times further reported that “agency officials have confirmed that the EPA has spent about $3 million in taxpayer money so far on salary, overtime and travel expenses for the security team.”
Pruitt currently faces 12 federal investigations related to how his practices as the EPA chief.
